Spring Concert: Gems from a French Publishing House

  • St. Thomas Lutheran Church 3800 East 3rd Street Bloomington, IN, 47401 United States (map)

If your chanson hit the Parisian publishing houses in the 1530s, it could go TikTok-viral. Located near the Sorbonne in Paris, Pierre Attaingnant’s (1492-1553) publishing house disseminated works by sixteenth-century household names including Josquin, Sermisy, Gervaise, and Janequin. Attaingnant mastered a new technology that made printing faster and more profitable: single impression printing. He was named the official “imprimeur et libraire du Roy en musique” (printer and bookseller of the King for music). Join us as we perform music from Attaingnant’s collections on our menagerie of Renaissance wind instruments: recorders, shawms, dulcians, tabor pipe, and string drum.
