If your chanson hit the Parisian publishing houses in the 1530s, it could go TikTok-viral. Located near the Sorbonne in Paris, Pierre Attaingnant’s (1492-1553) publishing house disseminated works by sixteenth-century household names including Josquin, Sermisy, Gervaise, and Janequin. Attaingnant mastered a new technology that made printing faster and more profitable: single impression printing. He was named the official “imprimeur et libraire du Roy en musique” (printer and bookseller of the King for music).
